Full-Spectrum vs. Broad-Spectrum CBD: What’s the Difference?

As you navigate the world of CBD products, you’ve probably encountered a few questions when checking out different brands and their labels. So many things are labeled as containing CBD, yet there are so many different types of products that it can be hard to know what you’re actually getting.

A common conundrum when purchasing CBD products is whether to purchase a full-spectrum or broad-spectrum product. In fact, what do those phrases even mean?

We’ll break it down for you.

Full-spectrum CBD oils or hemp extracts contain the entire array of 100+ cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, plus the additional beneficial components including terpenes, flavonoids, omega fatty acids, trace minerals, vitamins, and more. Full-spectrum CBD oils almost always include a very minor amount of THC - less than 0.3% by dry weight per federal regulations. This trace amount prevents most consumers from feeling high or having issues with drug tests.

Broad-spectrum CBD, on the other hand, is similar to a full-spectrum extract in that it includes the entire array of cannabinoids - except for THC. THC is typically stripped from the plant matter during the extraction process. While this is a good option for those who have particular sensitivities to THC or undergo rigorous drug testing, it does have one major drawback. THC is a crucial component of the “entourage effect,” which is basically the enhanced power that comes from the terpenes and cannabinoids working together for good, particularly star players CBD and THC.

Because of THC’s necessary boost for the entourage effect, Bluebird Botanicals specializes in full-spectrum hemp extracts. In each of our CBD oil products, our hemp extracts are emulsified, or blended, with natural carrier oils such as organic virgin hemp seed oil, organic extra virgin olive oil and organic fractionated coconut (MCT) oil. However, for those who do have the aforementioned aversions to THC, we also offer CBD isolate and a THC-Free* CBD Oil.
