Is There THC in CBD Oil?

Those who are completely new to the world of hemp extracts tend to have one key question when buying CBD oil for the first time: “is there THC in this?”

The answer is: sometimes. It depends entirely on what kind of product you’re consuming.

While there are many different types of hemp and CBD products, full-spectrum hemp extracts are among the most popular. Full-spectrum extracts contain the entire array of terpenes and cannabinoids, including up to 0.3% THC as stipulated by the legal definition for hemp in the 2018 Farm Bill.So yes, there is a small amount of THC present in full-spectrum blends.

Hemp companies like Bluebird Botanicals provide extensive third-party batch reports so that customers can verify the exact amount of THC present in their full-spectrum products. This is important because many customers, especially those who are new to CBD, often wonder whether THC will present any challenges for them with drug testing or potential psychoactivity.

Does CBD show up on drug tests?

Medical professionals, civil servants, teachers, and athletes often undergo rigorous drug screenings due to the nature of their careers. And although more and more states are legalizing medical and recreational cannabis, many employers and institutions still have a zero-tolerance policy. Most standard drug tests that screen for marijuana read “hot” if THC is detected. If you’ve been using full-spectrum CBD products for an extended period of time, it is possible that the THC may build up in your system and ultimately show up on a drug screening. That’s why we always recommend considering a CBD isolate or broad-spectrum product if you’re worried about drug screenings.

Likewise, many customers wonder whether the amount of THC in full-spectrum extracts will cause any psychoactivity. While this is a very rare occurrence, some people do have extra sensitivities to THC that may cause them to react differently to concentrated CBD products. This sensitivity depends almost entirely on your genetic makeup. While a vast majority of CBD users don’t experience these effects, it is a possibility. You know your own body best.

CBD isolate & broad-spectrum hemp extracts

With these considerations, many customers prefer to shop for CBD products that don’t contain THC. Fortunately, there are many products in this category. CBD isolate is a hemp extract that’s been stripped of all cannabinoids and terpenes, leaving behind only CBD. CBD isolate is also scentless and tasteless, making it a popular choice for unflavored products.

Likewise, broad-spectrum extracts are becoming increasingly popular. Broad-spectrum is similar to full-spectrum, but has been stripped of THC* specifically, leaving behind CBD and all the other minor cannabinoids.
