Chicago Officials Considering Only Letting Cannabis Licensees Sell Hemp-Derived THC Products

The Chicago City Council is considering a proposal that would only allow businesses with state-issued cannabis licenses to sell hemp-derived cannabis products containing THC.
Businesses without cannabis licenses would still be able to sell hemp products with minimal levels of delta-9 THC but would face restrictions on advertising and calling themselves dispensaries.
The proposal comes in response to the popularity of unregulated THC products and is aimed at addressing what Ald. Brian Hopkins calls a public health crisis.
Violations of the ordinance could result in fines of up to $5,000, license suspension or revocation, and product seizures by the police. State Rep. La Shawn Ford argues that the proposal would lead to job losses and create an illicit market.
