Florida Medical Marijuana Sales Top $145 Million in December, Bringing 2024 Total to Above $1.8 Billion

Key Points
  • Florida's medical marijuana market generated $1.81 billion in sales in 2024, making it the largest market in the nation.
  • Dried marijuana flower was the most popular category among purchases in December, followed by vape pens, edibles, concentrates, tinctures, capsules, and topicals.
  • The state's medical marijuana program, established in 2016 through Amendment 2, allows access to marijuana for patients with qualifying conditions.
  • Despite the thriving medical market, a recent attempt to legalize recreational marijuana for adults 21 and older through Amendment 3 in November fell short of the required 60% supermajority for passage.

This brings the year-to-date total for 2024 to an impressive $1.81 billion, reaffirming Florida’s position as the largest medical marijuana market in the nation. This is according to data released by the research firm Headset.

Dried marijuana flower remained the most popular category among purchases in December, followed by vape pens, edibles, concentrates, tinctures, capsules, and topicals. Established through the passage of Amendment 2 in 2016, Florida’s medical marijuana program allows patients with qualifying conditions—such as chronic pain, cancer, epilepsy, and PTSD—to access marijuana with a physician’s recommendation. Florida’s program supports nearly 900,000 registered patients served by approximately 620 licensed dispensaries statewide.

Although the medical market thrives, a recent attempt to expand access fell short. In November, more than 50% of voters supported Amendment 3, which aimed to legalize recreational marijuana for adults 21 and older. However, the measure failed to achieve the required 60% supermajority for passage.
