While this marked a decrease from the $346 million reported in November, it brought the state’s total marijuana sales for 2024 to an impressive $4.2 billion.

These sales generated over $900 million in tax revenue for the state in 2024. Dried marijuana flower remained the top-selling category, followed by vape pens, prerolls, edibles, and concentrates. The average price per gram of dried flower in December was $8.62, or $23.32 per eighth, while concentrates averaged $16.24 per gram. Blue Dream retained its position as the most popular strain of the month. Since legalizing marijuana in 2016 and opening recreational outlets in 2018, California has solidified its position as the nation’s largest marijuana market. Despite occasional fluctuations in monthly sales, the market continues to demonstrate its dominance with robust demand for a wide variety of products, including flower, edibles, tinctures, and topicals.

Earlier in December, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration announced $250.5 million in marijuana tax revenue for the third quarter of 2024.
