Government-Funded Study Finds Hemp Crude Oil Shows Antimicrobial Effects Against Bacteria Linked to Cattle Liver Abscesses
- Error internal
Researchers from the USDA Agricultural Research Service, the University of Kentucky, and Kansas State University have published findings in the journal Anaerobe showing that Cannabis sativa L. (hemp) crude oil extract exhibits antimicrobial activity against Fusobacterium necrophorum. This bacterium is a leading cause of liver abscesses in cattle, typically controlled through antibiotics mixed into feed. However, growing concerns about antimicrobial resistance have prompted interest in non-antibiotic alternatives.
In vitro tests demonstrated that both hemp crude oil and its isolated components were effective at suppressing Fusobacterium species, suggesting potential for the extract as a feed additive or preventative agent in livestock management. The researchers note that further study is needed to evaluate its safety, efficacy, and mechanisms of action in live animals.
