Illinois Cannabis Sales Bounce But Still Fall

Illinois released sales figures for adult-use cannabis in March today. The state’s adult-use cannabis sales were up 12.9% sequentially to $147.5 million, and this was an increase on a per-day basis of 2.0%. The year-over-year growth was -0.9%, worse than the gain in January but better than the decline in February:
Units sold increased by 6.6% from a year ago, suggesting lower prices or substitution of lower-priced products by consumers. Units sold rose 13.1% sequentially.
After increasing 106% in 2021, 13% in 2022 and then 5% in 2023, year-to-date adult-use sales were up 5.4% in 2024 to $1.72 billion. So far in 2025, they are unchanged. During March, sales to non-residents were 21.0%:
The state separately releases sales from its medical program, and the release for March showed that sales rose 12.0% sequentially to $19.7 million, which was down 14.7% from a year ago:
For March, combined adult-use and medical sales were $169.6 million, increasing 12.8% sequentially and down 3.0% from a year ago.:
Total sales of $2.01 billion in 2024 were up 2.5% from 2023. So far in 2025, they have declined by 2.3% compared to the first three months of 2024.
