Washington D.C. Marijuana Sales Top $5.78 Million in May, Setting New Monthly Record

That figure narrowly surpasses the previous high of $5.46 million recorded in April and more than doubles the $2.73 million sold in May 2024. Sales across cultivation centers and manufacturers brought the city’s combined marijuana market total for May to $8.98 million. The number of registered medical marijuana patients also continued to climb. In May, more than 53,000 patients participated in the program, including 17,880 D.C. residents, 14,075 self-certified out-of-state patients, and 2,580 reciprocity patients. Collectively, dispensaries conducted 72,056 transactions throughout the month.

While sales volume rose, average transaction size declined for the second consecutive month. The average purchase among D.C. residents was $69, down from $70 in April and $75 in March. In-store purchases among this group averaged $66, while deliveries averaged $152.

Flower remained the most popular product category in May, with 628 pounds sold for $3.15 million in revenue. Vape cartridges followed at $977,381, with pre-rolls generating an additional $459,086. Edibles were also in high demand, with 20,774 units sold totaling $619,127. Other categories showing growth included infused concentrates, tinctures, capsules, and infused topicals.

Among out-of-state consumers, Virginia once again led in temporary self-certifications, accounting for 4,713 of May’s non-resident registrations, followed by Maryland (1,991), North Carolina (996), Florida (555), and Texas (459).

The number of violations observed by the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCA) increased slightly in May, with one violation recorded compared to none in March or April. The agency also closed six unlicensed facilities during the month, up from two in April.

The rise in sales and patient participation comes as D.C. officials continue to navigate a regulatory landscape complicated by congressional restrictions. Despite the limitations, the city’s medical marijuana program is experiencing its strongest growth ever, with more than $15.9 million in dispensary sales generated between March and May alone.

With new patients enrolling at a steady pace and product availability expanding, D.C.’s marijuana market is on track to make 2025 its biggest year yet.
