Delaware officials are launching a Social Equity Financial Assistance Program. In a press release, the state Office of the Marijuana Commissioner (OMC) said the program “is designed to reduce structural barriers to entry that have historically limited opportunities for individuals and communities disproportionately impacted by prior marijuana laws.”

In a statement, Commissioner Joshua Sanderlin said the program’s launch marks a “significant step toward ensuring that the state’s adult-use marijuana industry develops in a manner that is inclusive, diverse, and sustainable.”

“This program is an essential component of our broader effort to build a regulated market that both protects public health and promotes equitable economic opportunity.” — Sanderlin, in a press release

The program limits eligibility to approved social equity cannabis licensees in the state, limiting funding amounts by license types. Grant funding will be disbursed in phases as operational milestones are achieved, while funds will be restricted to approved business expenses and are subject to oversight, according to the agency.

According to OMC, the grant funding is scheduled to commence in the coming weeks as qualifying businesses reach the designated milestones.

Lawmakers in the state legalized cannabis for adult use in 2023. Adult-use sales launched in the state in August.
