Massachusetts Marijuana Sales Near $1.3 Billion in 2025, August is Second-Highest Month Ever for Recreational Sales
Between January 1 and September 14, legal cannabis stores in Massachusetts recorded $1.26 billion in sales, including $146.7 million in recreational sales in August alone, the second highest total ever. The state also generated $10.3 million in medical cannabis sales in August, bringing the combined total to $157 million. Since recreational sales began in late 2018, Massachusetts retailers have sold $8.36 billion worth of marijuana products, while medical marijuana has brought in $1.5 billion since its program launched, combining for nearly $10 billion.
Massachusetts voters legalized recreational marijuana in November 2016 through a voter-approved ballot initiative. The state’s first adult-use dispensaries opened in November 2018, making it the first state on the East Coast to begin recreational sales. Marijuana in Massachusetts receives a 10.75% state excise tax, the standard 6.25% sales tax, and a local option tax of up to 3% that municipalities can impose.
With recreational sales consistently topping $140 million a month in 2025, the state’s marijuana industry continues to expand and demonstrate its resilience.
