According to a new report released by the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration, dispensaries drove the bulk of revenue, bringing in $5.4 million in August compared to just $2.8 million the year before. Manufacturer sales more than doubled year-over-year, climbing from $907,899 to $2.2 million. Cultivation centers, however, saw a decline, dropping from $808,132 in August 2024 to $588,546 this year. Patient participation also grew significantly. The report shows over 73,000 unique patients registered in August, up from 65,812 in July. Among them, 32,440 purchased from a licensed dispensary. D.C. residents made up the majority, with 19,052 unique patients, while another 2,105 non-resident reciprocity patients and 10,369 self-certified temporary patients were also active.
In terms of products, dried flower remained the backbone of sales, with 603 pounds sold for nearly $3 million. Vape cartridges continued to rise in popularity, with over 20,600 units sold totaling more than $1 million. Raw pre-rolls also performed strongly, generating over $500,000 in revenue. Other categories like edibles, tinctures, and concentrates held steady but at lower levels.
According to the report, patients from neighboring states continued to make up a notable portion of out-of-state activity, with Maryland leading at 852 unique patients, followed by Virginia at 835 and Florida at 162. These numbers highlight how D.C.’s reciprocity policy continues to attract patients from across the region.
The report also noted increased enforcement activity. Inspectors conducted 20 scheduled inspections in August, up from 11 the prior month, and closed seven unlicensed facilities. Nearly 2,900 pounds of cannabis waste were destroyed, the highest monthly total so far this year.
