Ohio Governor Signs Executive Order Banning Intoxicating Hemp Products, Citing Risks to Children

The directive requires retailers to pull these products from shelves and end sales or risk a $500 daily fine for each violation. After October 14, local and state authorities will also have the authority to seize the products. The order will remain in effect for 90 days, at which point it may expire or be extended by the legislature. DeWine said the move comes in response to rising cases of children being exposed to products that mimic mainstream candies. He called the items dangerous and unregulated, emphasizing that they can be sold to children.
“This is a fundamentally different product,” said DeWine. “Intoxicating hemp is dangerous and we need better to protect our children.”
The governor clarified that the ban does not apply to non-intoxicating hemp products or legal marijuana sold in licensed dispensaries.
