‘Bridging the Gap: Inside Modern Medical Cannabis Care’ – A New Series by Dr Sue Clenton

Medical cannabis is starting to have a very different kind of conversation in the UK. From mainstream voices like Rory Cellan-Jones exploring patient experiences on his Movers & Shakers podcast, to growing discussions among clinicians and campaigners, the topic is moving beyond stigma and into everyday healthcare.
Dr Sue Clenton, Consultant Oncologist and Medical Director at Releaf, is part of that change. After almost three decades in the NHS, and nearly twenty years as a consultant in oncology and symptom management, she joined Releaf earlier this year to help broaden access to safe, evidence-based cannabis treatment.
Now, in her new bi-weekly series for Cannabis Health, Dr Clenton will share what she’s learning from the front line of this emerging field. Bridging the Gap will explore how medical cannabis is being used to support patients with needs that the NHS often struggles to meet, and what a more integrated model of care might look like in future.
Each instalment will take readers inside the clinic, offering a doctor’s perspective on what it really means to prescribe cannabis medicines in the UK today — from questions of safety and patient follow-up, to clinical governance, stigma, and building trust between patients, doctors and regulators.
Speaking ahead of the launch, Dr Clenton said:
“I’ve spent my career working with patients who often feel they’ve run out of options. Cannabis medicines can offer a new route to relief, but it’s essential we use them responsibly and with care. This series is about sharing what that looks like in practice.”
Through her writing, Dr Clenton hopes to help shape a more open, evidence-based conversation about cannabis and its place in modern healthcare.
