Study: CBD Combined With Natural Antioxidants Reduces Aggression and Depression-Like Symptoms in PTSD

The research was conducted by scientists from Link Campus University, Biomedical Campus University of Rome, the University of Galway, and the University of Campania L. Vanvitelli. The team used male CD1 mice raised in prolonged post-weaning social isolation, a well-established model for PTSD-like symptoms. After 30 days in isolation, the animals were treated with CBD at various doses or with combinations of CBD plus either resveratrol or alpha-lipoic acid for 15 days. The goal was to determine whether adding antioxidant compounds could enhance CBD’s behavioral effects or reduce the need for higher CBD doses.
Low-dose CBD on its own showed little benefit, but pairing that same dose with resveratrol or alpha-lipoic acid restored the animals’ latency to the first aggressive attack and markedly reduced overall aggression. The combined treatments also reduced immobility time in the tail suspension test, an indicator of antidepressant-like activity. These improvements were comparable to those seen with high-dose CBD, suggesting a potential dose-sparing effect. The researchers did not observe meaningful changes in anxiety-related behavior, indicating that the synergy may be specific to aggression and depression-like symptoms rather than anxiety.
The findings highlight a possible therapeutic avenue for PTSD by combining CBD with widely available antioxidants. The authors say additional research is needed to clarify the mechanisms involved and to determine whether these interactions translate to humans.
