New Jersey Legislature Passes Bill Expanding Labor Protections for Marijuana Workers

A New Jersey bill expanding labor protections for employees in the state’s regulated marijuana industry cleared both chambers of the Legislature today, sending the measure to the governor’s desk. The Assembly approved Assembly Bill 4182 by a 54 to 18 vote, while the Senate passed the legislation 29 to 8. The bill establishes clearer conditions of employment and expands labor protections for marijuana industry workers.

Supporters say the legislation is intended to strengthen workplace standards in an industry that has expanded rapidly since adult-use marijuana sales began in New Jersey. While the legal market has created thousands of jobs, labor advocates and lawmakers have raised concerns about inconsistent employment practices and worker protections across licensed businesses.

Backers argue the bill provides greater clarity for both employers and employees by setting uniform expectations around working conditions, accountability, and labor rights. They say the changes will help stabilize the workforce as the state’s marijuana market continues to mature.

The proposal was first introduced in April 2024 and moved steadily through the legislative process, earning approval at multiple stages before today’s floor votes. With passage now complete in both the Assembly and Senate, the bill heads to the governor for consideration.

If signed into law, the measure would mark one of the most significant updates to labor standards specifically tailored to New Jersey’s marijuana industry since legalization.
