Poll Finds Majority of Americans, Including 51% of Republicans, Support Legalizing Marijuana Nationwide
A new national survey shows that a majority of Americans support legalizing marijuana, with backing extending across every major demographic group, including Republicans, according to polling conducted late last month. The survey, conducted by JL Partners among 1,000 registered voters on December 20 and 21 and first reported by the Daily Mail, found that 53% of respondents overall support legalization. Support was highest among Democrats, at 62%, but notably included 51% of Republicans — a finding that underscores how public opinion on marijuana has continued to shift across party lines.
Support also varied by gender and age. The poll showed that 58% of men favor legalization, compared with 50% of women. Voters between the ages of 30 and 49 were the most supportive demographic group, with 61% backing legalization, while support remained above opposition in every age bracket surveyed.
The polling comes days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the Department of Justice to quickly reschedule cannabis under the Controlled Substances Act.
