Rhode Island’s legal marijuana market generated $9.32 million in sales in February, marking a roughly 4% increase compared to the $8.98 million recorded during the same month in 2025. Of the February total, $8.33 million came from adult-use purchases, while $0.99 million was generated through the state’s medical marijuana program. Combined with January’s figures, Rhode Island has now recorded $19.5 million in marijuana sales during the first two months of 2026.

The state’s retail marijuana market also continues to show consistent consumer activity, with the average purchase in February totaling $36 per transaction.

Rhode Island legalized medical marijuana in 2006, although the first license dispensary didn’t open until 2013.

Recreational marijuana legalization came nearly a decade later. In May 2022, lawmakers approved legislation making Rhode Island the 19th state to legalize marijuana for adults 21 and older. Retail sales officially began on December 1, 2022, when existing medical dispensaries were authorized to also serve adult-use consumers.

Under Rhode Island law, adults 21 and older can legally possess up to one ounce of marijuana in public and up to 10 ounces inside a private residence. The law also allows home cultivation, with adults allowed to grow up to six plants, including a maximum of three mature plants.

Retail marijuana purchases in Rhode Island are subject to a combined tax rate of 20%. This includes the state’s standard 7% sales tax, a 10% marijuana excise tax and a 3% local cannabis tax collected by municipalities where sales take place.
