Total marijuana retail sales for January came to CA$466.1 million, up from CA$437.9 million in January 2025. That’s an increase of 6.6%, continuing the country’s trend of maintaining a large and steady legal market even as monthly totals fluctuate throughout the year.

Despite the year-over-year increase, January’s total fell short of the record-breaking $CA508 millions old in December 2025.

In January, Ontario again led all provinces by a wide margin, posting CA$173.1 million in sales for the month. Alberta ranked second with CA$81.9 million, followed closely by British Columbia at CA$79.2 million. Quebec was next at CA$57.4 million, giving Canada’s four largest provincial markets a dominant share of total national sales. Among the remaining provinces, Manitoba recorded CA$21.1 million and Saskatchewan brought in CA$20.5 million.

Other provinces and territories posted smaller but still notable totals. Nova Scotia reached CA$10.8 million, Newfoundland and Labrador recorded CA$9.4 million, and New Brunswick brought in CA$7.7 million. Canada legalized marijuana nationwide in October 2018, becoming the first G7 country to do so, with the first legal retail stores opening that same month. Those 18 and older are allowed to possess up to 30 grams of dried marijuana in public, with home cultivation allowed in most provinces. Marijuana is subject to a federal excise tax of either CA$1 per gram or 10% of the sale price, whichever is higher, alongside additional provincial taxes and retail markups.
