Illinois Marijuana Sales Reach $242 Million in 2026, Prices Down Over 30% From Early 2025

Key Points
  • Illinois recorded $242 million in legal marijuana sales during January and February 2026, with adult-use sales making up the majority of the revenue.
  • Sales in early 2026 are down about 24% compared to the same period in 2025, primarily due to a significant drop in prices rather than reduced demand.
  • The average price per gram of dried flower decreased by over 25% to $5.87, and concentrate prices fell more than 30% to $34.67, contributing to the overall sales decline.
  • Illinois' marijuana market remains strong and accessible due to lower prices, with adult-use cannabis legalized in 2019 and regulated by a tiered tax system based on THC content and product type.

Illinois recorded $242 million in legal marijuana sales through the first two months of 2026, with prices down over 30% from a year ago. That total includes $124 million sold in January, with $111 million coming from adult-use purchases and $13 million from medical marijuana sales. In February, sales reached another $118 million, including $105 million in adult-use sales and $13 million from the medical market.

The combined $242 million sold in January and February is down roughly 24% from the $318 million sold during the same period in 2025. But the decline appears tied largely to falling prices rather than a major drop in demand.

The average price per gram of dried flower in Illinois is now $5.87, down from $7.87 in January 2025. That marks a drop of more than 25%, and close to 30% when comparing broader pricing trends over the period. Concentrates saw an even steeper decline, falling from $51.22 to $34.67, a drop of more than 30%.

The numbers add to a trend seen in several legal marijuana states, where lower prices have helped keep products competitive and accessible even as total revenue softens. In Illinois, the lower per-gram and concentrate prices mean consumers are paying significantly less than they were at the start of last year, even with the market continuing to generate well over $100 million a month.

Illinois legalized adult-use marijuana in 2019, with the first licensed recreational stores opening on January 1, 2020. Adults 21 and older who are Illinois residents can possess up to 30 grams of flower, 5 grams of concentrates and 500 milligrams of THC in infused products, while non-residents can possess half those amounts. The state taxes adult-use marijuana on a sliding scale, with flower and products containing less than 35% THC taxed at 10%, infused products taxed at 20%, and products with more than 35% THC taxed at 25%, in addition to standard state and local sales taxes.
