President Trump Calls on Congress to Protect Access to Full-Spectrum CBD Products
- President Donald Trump is urging Congress to update federal law to protect access to full-spectrum hemp-derived CBD products, emphasizing their benefits for Americans with chronic pain and support for farmers.
- Trump highlighted an executive order he signed in December promoting research and innovation for hemp-derived CBD, noting that one in five adults used these products in the past year with many experiencing significant pain relief.
- He praised Dr. Mehmet Oz for launching a senior-focused model following the executive order but stressed the need for Congress to act to maintain access to these products while ensuring health risks are managed.
- The push for legislative action comes amid the Department of Justice’s efforts to reschedule medical cannabis to Schedule III, although hemp-derived products containing THC are still set to face a federal ban this November.
President Donald Trump is urging Congress to update federal law to protect access to full-spectrum hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) products, saying the products have helped many Americans dealing with chronic pain while also supporting farmers.
In a new post, Trump pointed to an executive order he signed in December calling for “Research and Innovation for Hemp-derived CBD,” saying the products have “made a HUGE difference for so many people.”
“In fact, ONE in FIVE adults used it in the past year, and many say it improved their chronic pain enormously,” Trump said.
Trump said Dr. Mehmet Oz moved quickly to follow the executive order’s directive by launching a model for some seniors earlier this month. However, he said Congress must still act to ensure Americans can continue accessing the products they rely on.
“I am calling on Congress to update the Law to ensure that Americans can continue to access the full-spectrum CBD products they have come to rely on, and that help them, while preserving Congress’s intent to restrict the sale of products that pose Health risks,” Trump said.
Trump said lawmakers must “get this done RIGHT and FAST,” especially for those who use CBD and those in the agricultural industry.
The comments come after the Department of Justice issued an order moving FDA-approved and state-sanctioned medical cannabis to Schedule III federally, while putting in place a process to move all cannabis to Schedule III. Despite this shift, hemp-derived products contain THC are set to be banned federally this November.
