New Mexico’s legal marijuana market sold $48,733,374.96 worth of products in May, bringing the state’s total for 2026 to nearly $250 million.

According to data from the state’s Cannabis Control Division, adult-use marijuana sales accounted for the large majority of May’s total, with $38,651,095.94 in purchases. Medical marijuana sales reached $10,082,279.06 for the month.

In all, there were 1,233,135 marijuana transactions in May, including 1,026,613 adult-use transactions and 206,522 medical transactions.

Since legal sales began, New Mexico marijuana stores have sold $2,309,363,209.01 worth of products. That includes $1,676,154,298.11 in adult-use sales and $633,208,934.07 in medical marijuana sales. The state has recorded 51,929,228 total marijuana transactions, including more than 40.1 million adult-use transactions.

The state currently lists 3,071 approved cannabis licenses, including 1,006 retailers, 900 manufacturers, 675 micro producers, 400 producers, 56 couriers, 28 consumption areas and six testing laboratories.

New Mexico legalized adult-use marijuana in April 2021, with possession and personal cultivation becoming legal on June 29, 2021. The first licensed adult-use stores opened on April 1, 2022. Adults 21 and older may possess up to two ounces of marijuana in public, with larger amounts allowed at home if stored securely. Adult-use marijuana is subject to a state cannabis excise tax of 13% through June 30, increasing to 14% on July 1, in addition to applicable gross receipts taxes. Medical marijuana sales are not subject to the cannabis excise tax.
