Massachusetts Legal Marijuana Sales Surpass $1 Billion in 2026

Licensed marijuana stores in Massachusetts have generated more than $1 billion in sales in 2026, according to new data released today by the state Cannabis Control Commission.

From January 1 through July 19, adult-use marijuana establishments reported approximately $926.2 million in gross sales, while medical marijuana treatment centers reported another $79.7 million in sales to patients and caregivers.

Combined, the state’s legal marijuana market generated approximately $1.01 billion during the first 200 days of the year. The commission’s figures are based on sales reported by licensed businesses through the state’s seed-to-sale tracking system.

June was the strongest full month of 2026 for adult-use retailers, with $156.4 million in sales. That was followed by $144.2 million in May, $137.9 million in April, $136 million in March, $135.5 million in January and $124.4 million in February.

Retailers sold another $91.8 million worth of adult-use marijuana during the first 19 days of July.

Adult-use marijuana sales are subject to a 6.25% state sales tax and a 10.75% marijuana excise tax, while municipalities may impose an additional local tax of up to 3%. Medical marijuana sales are exempt from taxation.

Since the commission began tracking the current medical and adult-use markets in November 2018, recreational marijuana establishments have generated approximately $9.78 billion in sales. Medical marijuana treatment centers have generated another $1.63 billion, bringing combined sales tracked by the commission to approximately $11.41 billion.

Massachusetts voters legalized adult-use marijuana in November 2016, and the state’s first two recreational stores opened on November 20, 2018. Adults who are at least 21 may purchase and possess up to two ounces of marijuana and keep up to 10 ounces at their primary residence. The two-ounce limit was increased from one ounce under legislation signed in April.
