California Dispensary Becomes First in State Approved to Launch RFID-Powered Self-Checkout

A Sacramento marijuana dispensary has become the first licensed retailer in California approved by state regulators to operate an RFID-powered self-checkout system.
MWG Holdings Group announced Tuesday that the technology is now available at its Perfect Union Northside dispensary following an observation and review by the California Department of Cannabis Control (DCC).
The EXO system was allowed to remain on the sales floor after demonstrating that it could operate while complying with California’s marijuana regulations. During the review, the system successfully communicated with the dispensary’s Treez point-of-sale platform and Metrc, the state’s marijuana track-and-trace system.
The technology uses radio-frequency identification, or RFID, to identify multiple products at the same time rather than requiring employees or customers to scan each item individually.
MWG said the system is designed to reduce checkout times while providing real-time inventory information, simplified inventory counts, loss prevention tools and additional operational controls.
“Bringing RFID-powered self-checkout to Perfect Union Northside gives our guests a faster, more seamless experience while giving our teams sharper inventory control and stronger security,” MWG Holdings CEO Tom Sheridan said.
The platform was developed by EXO and integrated with technology from Treez and Riot Insight. In addition to processing self-checkout purchases, the system provides inventory management, product labeling and loss detection capabilities.
RFID-powered checkout systems have been used in traditional retail stores, stadiums and entertainment venues, but their adoption in marijuana dispensaries has been limited by strict state tracking and compliance requirements.
Perfect Union operates dispensaries throughout California and is part of MWG Holdings Group, which also owns Wild Seed Wellness.
Self-checkout is currently available to customers at Perfect Union Northside in Sacramento. The company did not announce when or whether the technology will be introduced at its other California locations.
