Montana Marijuana Sales Reach $29.99 Million in July, Second-Highest Monthly Total Ever

Legal marijuana sales in Montana reached $29,992,180 in July, marking the second-highest monthly total recorded since recreational sales began.
According to data from the Montana Department of Revenue, July sales included $27,283,061 in adult-use marijuana and $2,709,119 in medical marijuana.
The $29.99 million total falls just short of Montana’s all-time monthly record of approximately $30.04 million, set in August 2025.
Through the first seven months of 2026, licensed marijuana retailers have generated $191,985,946 in sales. That is an increase of approximately $4 million, or 2.1%, compared with the $187,991,768 sold during the same period in 2025.

Since recreational sales began in January 2022, Montana has recorded $1,465,906,482 in combined medical and adult-use marijuana sales through July 2026. That includes $1,208,007,162 in adult-use sales and $257,899,319 in medical sales. The state estimates those purchases have generated $251,917,405 in marijuana tax revenue, including $241,601,432 from adult-use sales and $10,315,973 from medical marijuana.
Montana voters legalized recreational marijuana in November 2020 through Initiative 190. The state subsequently established its regulatory framework through legislation approved in 2021, with the first legal recreational marijuana sales beginning January 1, 2022.
Adults 21 and older may purchase and possess up to one ounce of marijuana flower, eight grams or eight milliliters of marijuana concentrates, or marijuana products containing up to 800 milligrams of THC.
Adult-use marijuana sales are subject to a 20% state tax, while medical marijuana is taxed at 4%. Counties may impose an additional local marijuana tax of up to 3% on recreational sales, medical sales or both.
