New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed new legislation allowing regulated cannabis microbusinesses to sell marijuana products at approved pop-ups, farmers markets, and other public events.

This move aims to empower small entrepreneurs, expand consumer access to safer, regulated products, and bolster New York’s growing cannabis industry.

The law expands on previous legislation, enabling microbusinesses to participate in Cannabis Showcase Events, fostering direct interaction between operators and consumers. Officials from the Office of Cannabis Management and advocacy groups like the Marijuana Policy Project laud the initiative as a crucial step for equitable opportunity, economic growth, and a potential model for other states, ensuring meaningful market access for small-scale growers.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday signed new legislation that allows the state’s regulated cannabis microbusinesses to sell marijuana and other weed products at approved pop-ups, farmers markets and other public events.

“This new law gives licensed microbusinesses and dispensaries a real chance to succeed in New York’s legal cannabis market,” Hochul said in a statement about the legislation. “By opening the door for legal operators to sell at approved community events and farmer’s markets we are putting small entrepreneurs on a level playing field, expanding consumer access to safer, regulated products and strengthening one of New York’s fastest growing industries.”

The legislation (S.10113/A.11217) expands on a law passed last year that allows licensed adult-use dispensaries to partner with licensed cultivators and processors to showcase and sell adult-use cannabis products at locations away from the dispensary premises at pop-up events, farmers markets and public markets. Under the new law, New York’s licensed microbusinesses can now participate in Cannabis Showcase Events (CSEs), which allow cannabis operators to interact directly with consumers at special events while strengthening partnerships with local governments.
