Ohio Adult-Use Cannabis Sales Top $1.5B Since Market Launch

Adult-use cannabis sales in Ohio have totaled more than $1.5 billion since they were legalized in 2024, according to state Department of Commerce data. The sales have produced more than $55 million from the excise tax on adult-use cannabis products for communities that host dispensaries.
In its July update, the agency said the statewide average per gram was about $6.54, down from the $9.40 per gram price when the market first launched. The average price for a manufactured adult-use cannabis product totaled $24.88.
Adult-use cannabis sales in Ohio carry a 10% excise tax in addition to the state’s 5.75% sales tax, making the rate paid by consumers 15.75% before local sales taxes. Communities that host dispensaries receive 36% of the excise-tax revenue attributable to sales within their jurisdictions; communities that do not allow sales do not receive a share of the profits.
The report shows that there are currently 223 dispensaries in the state but according to Ohio State University’s Drug Enforcement and Policy Center as of August 7, 137 jurisdictions have active moratoriums on adult-use dispensaries, which represents about 14% of the state’s population.
