Five reasons no one saw Prince Harry’s return to the U.K. coming

Prince Harry is coming home. Mind the gap whiplash.

Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are moving back to Britain within days and enrolling their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, in British schools — an extraordinary plot twist suggesting that England will not be just a base for the Sussexes, but their main home.

Trading what appeared to be an idyllic life on the sunny California coast for the Tupperware-gray skies of Britain came as a startling reversal.

“Not since Bobby Ewing stepped out of the shower in Dallas have we been forced to perform such a double take,” wrote Camilla Tominey in the Daily Telegraph, reaching back four decades for one of TV’s most famous plot twists.

A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan declined to comment when asked why the couple were returning.

Speculation over possible explanations has swirled — from the health of King Charles III to homesickness to the returning couple’s finances.

Two people familiar with the situation, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss private royal affairs, confirmed that the Sussexes would return to the United Kingdom later this month, living outside of London.

Perhaps the only predictable thing about Harry and Meghan, his Los Angeles-born wife, is their capacity to surprise. Six years ago they dramatically exited the U.K. after stepping back as working royals.

California didn’t look like exile but rather a fairy-tale ending: beaches, rescue chickens clucking in the backyard and Oprah Winfrey as a neighbour. What more could a prince who’d already found his princess want?

There were plenty of reasons to stay away from the London fog. Here are five that explain why royal-watchers and all of us were caught by surprise.

Harry could not have been clearer. Last year, he told the BBC: “I can’t see a world in which I’d bring my wife and children back to the U.K. at this point.”

In hindsight, “at this point” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Harry was speaking to the public broadcaster after losing a legal appeal over his security arrangements while in Britain. He even took the government to court — and ultimately lost — over the decision to strip him of automatic, taxpayer-financed police protection after he stepped down as a working royal. That decision has not been reversed.

However, the BBC reported Thursday that the family’s level of publicly funded security will be reassessed, as the existing arrangement was based on them visiting Britain, not living there.

There were other hints in Harry’s May 2025 interview with the BBC that the U.K. still had pulling power. “I love my country. I always have done, despite what some people in that country have done,” he said. “I miss parts of the U.K., of course I do, and I think that it’s really quite sad that I won’t be able to show, you know, my children my homeland.”

And yet, last month, Harry did exactly that. Meghan and the kids joined Harry on a trip to the U.K., including a visit with King Charles.

If Harry and Meghan were coming back to work for a slimmed-down monarchy, that would be one thing. But they are not returning as working royals. There is no desk waiting for Harry at Buckingham Palace.

They will be private citizens. Queen Elizabeth II rejected a “half in, half out” option, and there’s no evidence of a change of heart by Charles. Harry and Meghan gave up Frogmore Cottage, their five-bedroom residence in Windsor, after being asked to relinquish the property in 2023.

Harry is expected to be closely involved with the Invictus Games, a sporting competition for wounded veterans, and he retains strong ties with other U.K. charities. Meghan is expected to continue with her lifestyle business, As Ever.

But there has been no royal summons. No recall. Indeed, the king only heard of the plans over the weekend. Apparently, this was not his idea.

Harry’s loathing of the British tabloids is no secret. His public war with them was at odds with the royal family mantra: “Never complain, never explain.” His anger goes back to the death of his mother, Princess Diana, who was hounded by the press, and was further fueled by fear that Meghan could also fall prey.

In June 2023, in his lawsuit against the publisher of the Daily Mirror, Harry became the first senior royal in more than a century to testify in court. He stated that he and his wife moved to California “due to the constant intrusion, inciting of hatred and harassment by the tabloid press into every aspect of our private lives, which had a devastating impact on our mental health and well-being.”

He took his fight to other newspapers as well. In 2025, he settled with Rupert Murdoch’s media group for more than 10 million pounds (about US$13 million). Last month, however, he lost a case against the publisher of the Daily Mail, which Harry called a “complete and obvious whitewash, but sadly not altogether unexpected.”

Now, he is returning his family to a country whose tabloid culture he said once drove them away.

Harry’s relationship with his father, Charles, has improved since the spring of 2025, when Harry disclosed that the two weren’t speaking. They had tea that September, and Harry’s family met Charles and Queen Camilla last month at Highgrove, the monarch’s personal home in Gloucestershire.

It appeared to go well, and Harry was reportedly “buoyed” and “energized” by the meeting.

But while Harry’s relationship with Charles has thawed, his relationship with his brother Prince William, the likely next king, remains in a deep freeze. The two do not talk. The BBC said William and Catherine were made aware of the Sussexes’ return, but Kensington Palace has not released a statement.

There were chickens in the backyard, children playing in the garden, bicycle rides with Archie, and intertwined palm trees that Harry thought represented himself and Meghan. If this was exile, banishment had a lot going for it.

At least in the images they projected, the Sussexes seemed settled.

In May 2021, Harry told the podcast “Armchair Expert” that in their Santa Barbara community, Montecito, he walked around “feeling a little bit more free” and could take “Archie on the back of my bicycle.”

The U.K., on the other hand, was a place Harry visited — and sometimes only fleetingly. When Charles was diagnosed with cancer in February 2024, Harry jumped on a plane but reportedly spent only 45 minutes with his father at Clarence House, and he was back at Heathrow the following day.

In the 2021 docuseries “The Me You Can’t See,” Harry said that when he flew to Britain, he felt “worried, concerned, a little bit tense and uptight,” adding that “London is a trigger because of what happened to my mum.”

Now, and again, it’s home.
