Maine Now Has 187 Active Adult-Use Marijuana Stores, Up From 163 a Year Ago

Maine now has 187 active adult-use marijuana stores, 24 more than a year ago, according to licensing data that was updated today by the state’s Office of Cannabis Policy (OCP).
The latest data show 187 active retail stores, 80 product manufacturing facilities and 76 cultivation facilities. The cultivation licenses include 31 Tier 2 facilities, 25 Tier 3 facilities, 10 Tier 4 facilities, seven Tier 1 canopy facilities, two Tier 1 plant-count facilities and one nursery.
OCP separately lists three licensed and certified marijuana testing facilities, bringing the number of active adult-use establishments across the state’s four primary license categories to 346.
The retail portion of Maine’s adult-use marijuana market has expanded notably over the past year. The state now has 187 active stores, compared with 163 around the same time in 2025.
That represents an increase of 24 stores, or approximately 15%, over the past year. Retail stores now account for more than half of all active adult-use marijuana establishment licenses in the state.
As of September 2026, Portland remains the state’s largest adult-use marijuana business hub, with 42 active licenses across license categories. Auburn ranks second with 22, followed by South Portland with 18. Lewiston, Sanford and Bangor each have 14 active licenses.
The longer-term expansion has been considerably larger. Maine had 334 active adult-use licenses at the end of 2024 and 300 at the end of 2023. Retail has accounted for much of that growth, increasing from 169 active stores at the end of 2024 to 180 at the end of 2025 and 187 in the latest data.
Maine’s first adult-use marijuana establishments received active licenses in September 2020, with recreational sales beginning October 9 of that year. The state licenses adult-use cultivation facilities, product manufacturers, stores and testing facilities.
