The peer-reviewed journal Cannabis & Cannabinoid Research is seeking submissions for an upcoming special issue focused on minor cannabinoids, an area of marijuana research that has expanded considerably in recent years.

The special issue, titled “Mechanisms and Translation of Minor Cannabinoids,” will focus on research examining lesser-studied cannabinoids and efforts to translate findings about the compounds into potential clinical applications.

Researchers have until April 30, 2027, to submit manuscripts for consideration.

Minor cannabinoids include compounds such as cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN), cannabichromene (CBC), tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) and cannabidivarin (CBDV), among numerous others found in the marijuana plant.

While THC and CBD have historically received much of the scientific attention surrounding marijuana, research into other cannabinoids has increased substantially. Recent studies have examined their potential effects on pain, inflammation, neurological conditions, sleep, metabolism and other areas.

The forthcoming special issue is intended to highlight research investigating the mechanisms through which minor cannabinoids produce their effects, as well as work examining how findings from laboratory and preclinical research could eventually translate to human health applications.

The announcement comes amid a broader increase in scientific interest in minor cannabinoids. A 2026 bibliometric analysis examining more than 1,500 publications found that research activity involving minor cannabinoids increased sharply beginning in 2017 and reached its highest level in 2024. The researchers described the field as rapidly expanding while noting that significant areas remain understudied.

Cannabis & Cannabinoid Research publishes basic, translational and clinical studies involving marijuana, cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system, along with behavioral, social and other related research.
